Frequently Asked Questions

Craftsmanship & Materials

1 / What does “hand-silvered” mean?

It’s the traditional way of applying a silver layer to the back of glass by hand. Unlike machine-made mirrors, each one is unique, with its own tone, depth, and light pattern. Hand-silvering gives antique mirror glass its rich, characterful look.

2 / How do you silver a mirror?

We carefully clean and prepare each glass panel, then apply a chemical silvering solution that creates a fine reflective layer. Finally, we add a protective backing paint to keep it durable for years.

3 / How is antique mirror glass different from modern mirrors?

Antique mirrors are intentionally aged to show gentle clouding, spotting, or fading around the edges. Modern mirrors are perfectly uniform; antique ones have warmth and timeless character.

4 / Can you make custom finishes?

Yes. We can vary the level of ageing, tone, or reflectivity, and even add etched designs, patterns, or logos. Every mirror is made to order in our workshop.

5 / Are hand-silvered mirrors durable?

Yes, especially with our specialist protective backing. They’ll last for decades when cared for properly. For humid rooms, it’s best to seal the edges during installation.

6 / Can old or damaged mirrors be re-silvered??

In most cases, yes.  We can strip the old coating, re-prep the glass, and apply a new silver layer. If your existing finish has attractive patina or “foxing,” we can preserve it instead.

7 / What causes “foxing” in mirrors?

Foxing is the natural speckling or cloudy pattern that develops over time as the silver reacts with air and moisture. We can replicate this ageing process to create new mirrors with a vintage feel.

Care & Installation

1 / Can these mirrors go in bathrooms or humid areas?

Yes, with proper edge sealing and ventilation. Avoid direct or constant water contact to keep the finish pristine.

2 / What’s the difference between back-silvered and front-silvered mirrors?

Back-silvered mirrors have the reflective coating behind the glass, which protects it from wear — this is the standard type. Front-silvered mirrors are used for decorative or artistic effects.

3 / How do I clean and maintain my mirror?

Use a soft, dry cloth or a gentle glass cleaner. Avoid strong chemicals or scrubbing pads. Distressed finishes should only be lightly dusted to preserve their aged charm.

Ordering & Trade

Light antique restoration of an ornate Rococo-style mirror frame and glass
1 / How long does production take?

All of our antique mirror glass is made to order, and production typically takes 2–4 weeks. Each panel is hand-silvered and aged by our team, which requires careful curing time to achieve the right tone and character. Larger mirrors or custom finishes may take a little longer, but we’ll always give you a clear timeline when you place your order.

2 / Do you offer trade or bespoke project services?

Absolutely. We work with interior designers, furniture makers, architects, and hospitality projects across the UK. Custom sizes, colours, and finishes are all available. With no minimum size requirement and a maximum size of 4m x 1.4m, we are here to bring your ideas to life!

3 / Do you deliver nationwide?

Yes, we deliver across most of the UK, either personally or using specialist glass carriers who handle fragile items with care. All mirrors are securely packed and insured during transport.

4 / Can I visit your workshop?

We don’t have a public showroom, but you can pre-book a visit to view samples or discuss your project. Our glass and silvering workshop is based in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.workshop.
